The holidays are right around the corner, and you’ve already broken out the holiday lights from that box in the garage. The only problem? Your lawn is full of palm trees that don’t usually lend themselves to festive decor. Luckily, there is a way to wrap your palm trees in holiday lights without damaging them. To keep your Tucson lawn feeling merry and bright, try these tips.
Buy the Right Lights
Before getting onto the stepladder, make sure you’ve purchased the correct type of holiday lights. Some string lights are only designed for indoor use, so check the outside of the package to ensure that yours are suitable for the great outdoors. Aesthetics matter too: a brown strand of string lights will blend in with the palm trees and make the lights stand out more.
Wrapping the Tree
When it comes to wrapping your palm tree, you’ll want to start at the base and work your way up. If the strand of lights continues to slide down the surface, you can use a staple gun to attach them. Make sure you’re using a light duty version and not a construction-grade option, as heavy duty staples can damage your tree. As you get further up the trunk, you may need to use a ladder to reach the top. Have a family member or friend spot you as you climb. If you decide to wrap the palm fronds in lights as well, you can use twist ties to secure the strands.
Safety First
As with any electrical equipment, string lights can pose a safety hazard if not used correctly. The extension cord you use to connect the lights to a power source should be rated for outdoor use. These types of cords can withstand the effects of inclement weather and will promote the longevity of your string lights.
