You love your furry friend and treat them like a member of your family. However, you may have noticed that it can be difficult to keep your yard in great shape with the damage that can be incurred by your pet. While it may be impossible to keep your landscaping pristine with pets roaming the yard, you can mitigate the worst of your furry friend’s effects on your yard while still enjoying their company for years to come.
Lawn Care
Your lawn is the area of your yard that can be hit hardest by pet damage. In addition to the constant foot traffic on your lawn, dog urine can cause spots of grass to turn dry and yellow. It can be extremely difficult to encourage new grass to grow in these areas, turning your lawn into a patchy mess. Luckily, there are several types of ground cover that are more resistant to this kind of damage. Clover is a great option that is less likely to stain and is relatively easy to maintain.
Fences and Wire Cages
If you have a green thumb, you may be hesitant to ditch the beautiful plants you’ve spent so long cultivating. If your dog is wreaking havoc on your pansies or marigolds, consider erecting a miniature fence or wire cage around the affected area. Picket fences can create a charming pastoral feel, while chicken wire serves as more of a quick fix. The latter isn’t especially attractive, but it can provide a short term solution while you build a more appealing fence.
Dog Paths
If you have a fence around your yard, try to avoid planting anything along the border. Dogs tend to frequent this area as they patrol their territory, creating ‘dog paths’ that destroy grass and other plants. One option is to construct stone walkways along these areas, providing an even surface for your dog to walk on and decreasing the chances of damaging plants.
