Decide What Types of Trees You Want

Each tree is different, which means that the amount of space you’ll need will depend on the types of trees you want to plant. It is also important to consider what size of trees you want, as fruit trees range in size from dwarf, to semi-dwarf, to standard. Dwarf-sized trees typically get to 8 to 10 feet in height and width. Semi-dwarf trees tend to get to 12 to 15 feet in height and width, though sweet cherry trees can get to 15 to 18 feet tall and wide. Standard-sized trees typically get to 18 to 25 feet tall and wide, though peach and nectarine trees tend to stay between 12 to 15 feet tall and wide.

Determine How Many Trees You Want

Most standard-sized fruit trees need approximately 20 feet by 20 feet of space to grow properly, though standard-sized apple and sweet cherry trees need around 35 by 35 feet of space. Citrus trees only require about 8 feet to grow properly. If you choose semi-dwarf or dwarf-sized trees, then you’ll need less space between them. Most dwarf-sized fruit trees require 10 feet by 10 feet of space, though dwarf-sized pear trees require 12 feet by 12 feet of space. These basic space requirements can help you determine how many of each type of tree will work in your yard.
