Citrus trees are popular additions to yards in Southern Arizona. Not only do they beautify the property, but they also bear delicious fruits to enjoy. Furthermore, Arizona has an ideal climate for growing citrus trees, either permanently outdoors or in moveable containers. When you’re ready to start growing citrus trees, you may have the following questions.
Where is the best spot to plant a citrus tree?
If you’re planting in the ground, you should choose a spot that will allow your citrus tree to grow for many years to come. In other words, avoid areas that are near power lines and structures. It’s also best to avoid western exposures. This is because the afternoon sun in these areas can be intense enough to burn trees and their fruit.
How far apart should I space multiple citrus trees?
It depends on whether you’ve selected standard size or dwarf varieties. Dwarf varieties should be spaced six to 10 feet apart. Increase the distance to 12 to 25 feet for standard size trees. In general, the larger the fruit is, the more space the trees will need.
How much water do citrus trees need?
Providing your citrus trees with enough water—but not too much—is critical for their success. The exact amount of water the trees will need depends on the weather and the maturity of the trees. Newly planted trees require more frequent watering than established trees. Mature trees need a greater volume of water as they grow larger. For newly planted citrus, it’s ideal to water to a depth of one to two feet. Mature trees that are at least three years old should be watered to a depth of three feet. Between watering, the top few inches of soil should dry out completely.
