Good soil is an essential foundation for a beautiful, thriving garden. Unfortunately, gardeners in desert regions like Southern Arizona face considerable challenges. The soil in this area tends to
either have high clay content, or be rocky or sandy. It’s also common for desert gardeners to have problems with high soil alkalinity (pH) and high salt content. Because of these challenges, soil testing is absolutely crucial before planting a garden.
Understanding Soil Tests
There are home testing kits available at garden supply stores. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using them. Note that you should only test dry soil; dampness can cause false readings. Alternatively, you can have your landscaping contractor take care of it for you. One of the most important results to look for is the pH of your soil. Most plants prefer a pH between 6.2 and 7.2. However, your landscaper can let you know if your chosen plantings prefer a different pH range.
Using Soil Amendments
Another result to look for from your soil test is the composition of nutrients. Usually, for a desert landscape, it’s recommended that organic material be added to the soil to improve the nutrient levels. You will ideally want to have a rich, loamy soil. In addition to purchasing bulk soil and amendments to work into your soil, you can add composted grass trimmings and leaves. While you’re working the organic matter into your garden beds, remove any large rocks that can inhibit root growth. You’ll also need to work in amendments that can lower the typically high pH of desert soil. Sulfur is a commonly recommended soil conditioner for these alkaline soils.
