One of the keys to keeping plants healthy is fertilizing them on an appropriate schedule. However, not all plants need the same amount of fertilizer or the same type of fertilizer. Since many species of cactus grow naturally throughout Tucson, you may be wondering if the cacti in your landscaping need to be fertilized at all. The answer is yes, but you need to be sure you’re following the right fertilization protocol.
Why Fertilize Cacti
Like all plants, species of cactus require nutrients to grow and thrive. While cacti may survive for long periods without any fertilizer, fertilizing your cacti on a regular schedule will help to encourage healthy growth, as well as seasonal flowering. If you are adding young cacti to your landscaping with the goal of having them grow well and fill in your yard, make sure you fertilize them regularly to ensure they have everything they need to maintain healthy growth.
When to Fertilize Cacti
In the springtime, you should inspect your cacti each week for signs of new growth, and begin fertilizing them when new growth appears. After that, fertilizer should be applied every eight weeks throughout the spring and summer. You should fertilize cacti a total of three times during these seasons. Cacti do not grow during the fall or winter, so no fertilizer is needed during this time.
How to Fertilize Cacti
A low-nitrogen fertilizer is best for cactus species. A 5-10-10 blend works well, and should be diluted with water. Apply the mix of water and fertilizer to the soil around each plant until it is fully drenched, and then allow the soil to dry completely before watering your cacti again.
