Root rot is one of the most serious conditions that your trees can develop. If your trees have it, you will need the assistance of a landscaping company to treat it adequately. Without treatment, the growth and life of your tree will be compromised. If you recognize any of the common signs of root rot, contact your landscaping company as soon as possible. Here are some of the signs of root rot and a look at how it can be treated.
Root Rot Symptoms
Root rot occurs when soil is overwatered or doesn’t drain property. Because of the excess water, roots are unable to get all an adequate amount of oxygen from the soil. Starved of oxygen, the roots decay and die. As they decay, the rot can be spread to healthier roots, perpetuating the condition. Roots that are exposed to high levels of water are also vulnerable to fungal infections, which can also cause root rot.
Root rot can cause a number of different symptoms and is often initially mistaken for pest infestations. Some of the signs include:
- A decline in growth that happens quickly or gradually over time without a clear reason.
- Pale leaves
- Small leaves
- Wilted or brown leaves
- Thin canopy
- Branch dieback
- Appearance of fungus that grows from the base and may cause calluses
Root Rot Treatments
The treatment for root rot depends on the stage at which it is diagnosed. It is much easier to treat in the early stages of the disease, when removing the infected roots can stop it from spreading. In some cases, chemical fumigants are applied around the base of the tree to reduce the level of infection, though they cannot completely cure root rot. If your tree is significantly infected, then it may need to be removed from your yard. After it is removed, the soil where it was planted will be treated with fumigants. Allowing a diseased tree to remain in place could cause the infection to spread to other trees.
