In March, the temperatures in the desert start to warm up. However, it’s still possible to get an occasional frost this time of year. Remember to check the forecast each evening. If frost is likely, you can throw some burlap sacks or a similar covering over young or otherwise vulnerable plants.
Caring for Your Lawn
If you plan to establish a new lawn this year, March is an ideal time to have the landscaping company lay down some Bermuda sod. If you already have a Bermuda lawn established, it will need watering about once per month. Ryegrass requires watering once or sometimes even twice weekly. You can begin mowing your lawn shorter when the overnight temperatures are at least 60 degrees on at least five consecutive nights.
Caring for Your Trees and Shrubs
March is a good time of year to shape overgrown hedges. It’s also ideal for pruning, especially citrus trees. However, since it’s all too easy to make serious mistakes when pruning trees, it’s best to leave this task to certified arborists. If any of your trees are damaged by frost, you should wait to schedule pruning until the new growth appears. March is also a good time of year to plant new trees. They’ll have time to get established before the heat of summer sets in.
Caring for Your Vegetable Garden
If you haven’t already done so, begin cutting back on the old and dead growth in your garden. Prepare the soil with organic mulch or compost. Test the soil before adding fertilizer to your vegetable garden. In March, you can also begin transplanting pepper and tomato seedlings. In addition, you can directly sow seeds of beets, carrots, beans, cucumbers, melons, squash, and pumpkins.
