The winter shopping season is upon us, but instead of giving a gift that will be forgotten about in a few weeks, consider giving potted plants instead. A gifted plant will bring new life into your loved one’s home (literally) and create joy all year round. There are many potted plants to consider giving as gifts to your family and friends. Use the following guide as inspiration, and be sure to settle the plant in a beautiful new pot before sending it to its new home.
Christmas Cactus
The Christmas cactus is a gorgeous succulent that blooms every year right around the holidays—hence, the name. The plant is comprised of flat, glossy green leaf segments that hang over the pot and can grow up to three feet long. When the plant blooms, the flowers are red, white, pink, yellow, or purple. This potted plant is perfect for placing on a large window ledge, as it loves the sun. However, cooler temperatures are what trigger the blooms, so instruct your loved one to keep it away from heaters.
Jade Plant
This potted plant is also known as the friendship plant or the dollar plant. They have traditionally been given as housewarming gifts, as they are thought to bring good luck to the owner. The jade plant is a thick-leafed succulent that adores plenty of sunlight. (Although young jade plants should have indirect sunlight to prevent leaf scorching.) It needs frequent watering, yet must be allowed to drain completely.
Orchid
The orchid has a reputation for being temperamental. While growing them indoors is actually easier than you might think, it’s still best to give this type of plant to someone with a green thumb. Orchids thrive on indirect sunlight and about half a cup of water per week. The trick to growing orchids successfully is to ensure plenty of airflow around the roots.
