Many people think mulching around trees is for visual appeal, but did you know mulch serves as more than just decoration to your trees? An arborist can help you select the best mulch for your tree. Keep reading to learn how your tree can benefit from mulch.
Moisture
When you water your trees, the soil and roots absorb the moisture immediately. Imagine drinking water from a bottle very quickly. Inevitably, some of the water will dribble out. Roots can only drink up so much water so fast. Adding mulch allows for a slow release of the moisture ensuring the roots are getting property hydrated and the soil maintains its structure. This is especially helpful during periods of heavy rain.
Soil Temperature
Mulch also helps to protect the roots from the hot sun and provide temperature control. Roots grow best under moderate soil temperatures, meaning mulch helps to keep the soil warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Protection
Weed whackers and lawnmowers can cause bark damage, but let’s not forget the damage that can be caused to your equipment if it hits any roots. A ring of mulch around the base of the tree inhibits weed growth and prevents grass from growing around the base of the tree which would compete for vital nutrients, eliminating the need for mowing. It also provides a barrier between any pesticides or other chemicals used on your landscape.
Proper Use
A layer of mulch 3-6” deep should be adequate. The mulch should not touch the base of the tree to avoid causing the root crown to rot. Give the trunk approximately 3” of breathing room, making a doughnut shape around the tree that extends two to three feet out from the tree. This should provide ample coverage and protection for the tree’s roots and soil structure.
