Gardening is a personally fulfilling activity that enriches one’s life and delights the soul. Yet, it isn’t always possible for everyone to enjoy gardening. Individuals who rely on wheelchairs for mobility may not be able to navigate garden pathways, let alone reach traditional vegetable beds from the height of the wheelchair. However, it’s definitely possible to design a garden specifically for those who use wheelchairs. Use these tips to get started.
Establish safe and accessible garden pathways.
Every part of the garden should be accessible on a wheelchair-friendly path. Make the paths wide enough to accommodate the wheelchair, as well as to allow the gardener to turn around if need be. Wheelchair paths should be firm, sturdy, and level. For safety’s sake, it’s best to choose poured concrete or pavers that have been laid close together.
Build elevated planters.
Some groundcovers and border plants may be used for aesthetic purposes if a non-wheelchair user will be tending to them. However, to allow wheelchair gardeners access to the plants, the majority of the plants should be in raised planters. Raised garden beds can be constructed of wood, brick, or stone. An ideal design allows the wheelchair gardener to pull up to the planter and roll the lap underneath it (in the same manner as pulling up to a desk or table). These “garden tables” allow wheelchair gardeners easier access to the plants.
Look for adaptive gardening tools.
Even with wheelchair accessible pathways and planters, it never hurts to have a few adaptive gardening tools. Look for ergonomic tools that feature extra-long handles. Ideally, choose lightweight tools designed to prevent fatigue and repetitive strain injuries. It’s also helpful to attach a bag or portable tool organizer to the back of the wheelchair to carry tools around the garden.
