Date palms are native to desert regions, making them a smart choice for Arizona property owners. Once established, date palms are hardy trees that are easy to care for. They add beauty and elegance to the landscape. In addition, they produce delicious dates. If you enjoy DIY projects, you can germinate your own date palm tree, or you can hire a landscaping contractor to plant a young date palm on your property.
Soak the seeds.
Eat a few dates and extract the seeds inside. Rinse the seeds to remove any lingering fleshy bits of fruit. Then, place them in a dish and cover the seeds with cool water. Soak the seeds for one week, changing the water every day to prevent mold growth.
Seal up the seeds.
After one week, remove the seeds from the water. Dampen a paper towel, wring out the excess water, and place the seeds on the paper towel. Fold the other half of the paper towel over on top of the seeds. Place the paper towel in a plastic bag and seal it. Then, place the plastic bag in a warm place, such as on top of a grow light.
Watch for germination.
Check the paper towel at least once per day. If you see mold accumulating, change the paper towel. Make sure the seeds stay moist. Within a few weeks, you should see signs of germination.
Plant the germinated seeds.
Once you see small, white roots growing out of one side of the seeds, they are ready for planting. Use a palm or cactus potting soil mix. Plant each seed in a small pot with the soil mix and water it. As your date palms grow, you’ll need to transplant them to larger pots. Eventually, they’ll need to be transplanted outdoors.
